Why This Matters

You can spearfish in the midwest? You betcha. But before 2022, you were not allowed to spear gamefish. Until now. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Johnathan Durtka Trout, Walleye, and Northern Pike are on the menu in 2022. What’s the big deal?

  • The spearfishing community has 3 years to prove to the DNR and NRC that this is a sustainable method of fishing and we’re grateful for this opportunity.

  • If they don’t like what they see during this trial period, they can revert to the old regulations. That would suck. We need to report our harvest, avoid exclusively targeting trophy fish, fish responsibly and create a welcoming community.

  • The boundaries are extremely limiting to the spearfishing community. We hope to prove that spearos deserve the same fishing boundries as every other angler in Michigan.

Our Goals

  • Inform people about spearfishing

  • Create a solid foundation for the sport

  • Expand the spearfishing boundries

  • Recruit more people into the sport

  • Position Michigan as a unique freshwater spearfishing destination

  • Prove to the DNR the economic value of this sport to the State of Michigan
